BRIDGE HOUSE BAR PROJECT

Location:
Rotterdam, NL
Date:
Spring 2022

From empty bridge house to bustling meeting spot.

This project challenged me to transform an existing space in to a bar- or social meeting space.

My chosen location was the bridge house in one of the oldest harbours of Rotterdam; de Jan Kuitenbrug in de Oude Haven. A space that has history, and showcases what Rotterdam was before the tall skyscrapers and metal & glass structures that tower above us.

As the Netherlands has always had a strong connection to- and with the water around and amongst us, I wanted this to be one of the main elements in my design. Being with the water versus on it.

This resulted in a multi-level concrete structure which is (depending on the water levels) either fully- half, or less than partially submerged in the water. This allows visitors to always be able to use the space, and work with the water instead of against it.
